Winters can be harsh and, in some places, blizzards and snow can totally block your driveways and garages. A well insulated and warm garage can be the ideal place for work or storage during winter.

Cold weather can be unpredictable, the temperatures sometimes drop to frightening-lows and all that there is left to do is stay indoors and prepare to plow snow the next morning.  Garages are often the space you use for not only parking your car, but to store an assortment of miscellaneous items and whatnot.

If you have installed a power washer, the residual water in the pipes will freeze, causing cracks. The same applies for fuel gels that will also harden and cause damage to combustion engines. If you are storing paint in your garage, it is sure to freeze, which will cause it to separate, making it useless.

Here are a few tips to winterize your garage to save the damage and hassle:

1.Weatherstripping

Weatherstripping is really important when it comes to staying warm indoors and prevents...

Crisp fresh air, cold noses, and warm fuzzy sweaters can only mean one thing – fall is here!  This past weekend, I indeed pulled on a warm, fuzzy sweater, went outside and inhaled the crisp, fresh air.  I soon had a cold nose.  Yep, fall is upon us and so is garden clean up time. I pulled on my rubber boots, grabbed a pair of gardening gloves and off to the garage I trotted to fetch the items I needed, confident it would only take me a few seconds to locate them.  Admittedly, it took me longer than a few seconds, in fact, it took me over 10 mins of searching and digging to find everything I needed.  As I walked out of the garage trying to dodge the snake-like hoses that I swear were trying to crawl up my leg, I knew what was next on my to-do list – organizing the garage.

The garden beds were raked, bulbs were hauled up and readied for storage, and plants that had to wait until now to be divided were safely tucked in new beds.  Burlap wraps were rolled up and placed...

Have you noticed the beautiful fall colours outside?  The golds, browns, and spectacular crimson coloured leaves?  Aren’t they gorgeous?  They remind me of the colour of spices... warm, fragrant, and enticing spices - and spices remind me of cooking, which makes me think of the kitchen, which in turn reminds me I haven’t cleaned up my spice cabinet for quite a while!  Do you regularly check your spices for expiration dates?

We always hear about Spring Cleaning, but what about Fall Cleaning?  It’s a perfect time to get organized for the Holidays and clean up from the good ol’ days of summer.  I’m going to start with - you guessed it - my spice cabinet.  Now is the perfect time to take out all of the spices, give them a quick wipe down, and check those expiration dates (spices do lose their potency, over time, so best to discard all those old ones!).  While I have the spices out on my counter top, I’m going to wipe down the inside of the cabinet and organize t...

I spent the past weekend at the cottage enjoying the last long weekend of ‘summer like weather’.  Mother Nature cooperated and gifted us with gorgeous weather, a soft breeze, and incredible fall foliage.  A good time was had by all who attended our Thanksgiving get-together.  We ate, laughed, reminisced, recalled old memories, and made new ones.  As the day faded into dusk, we said our good-byes and promised to meet again next year – same place, same time.  It was with a tinge of sadness that I said good-bye to our guests, yet I was filled with a sense of happiness and accomplishment at having hosted another wonderful family gathering.

With a sigh of contentment I turned around, and then reality hit. Hard. I was overwhelmed at what had to be accomplished in one short day in order to close up the cottage by the following afternoon. I took a deep breath, remembered the 10 questions to ask myself before I start organizing, and immediately felt a bit better.  As I clea...

Can you believe summer is over? Where has it gone? As much as I hate to see summer fade, I do love the fall and all it has to offer. The gorgeous fall flowers, the incredible fall foliage, the delicious smell of apple pie cooking, and the fresh, crisp air. Time to put away the summer things and get ready for cooler weather ahead.

This long weekend gives us just what we need to do that - an extra day we can devote to organizing. Time to declutter and put things in order so we can stop moving summer clothes out of the way to find our cozy sweaters, tossing sandals to the side of the closet (on top of the pile of flip flops) to find our fall shoes, and digging through last years gathering of mismatched gloves and mittens to find a matching pair. Yes, the time is here to bravely march forward and organize our homes (and lives) so we can enjoy more leisure time sipping cider in front of a warming fire, apple picking, or curling up and enjoying a good book. After all, we will have earned it...
