Fall is the perfect time of the year to start organizing your kitchen. With the cool breeze blowing outside, it’s time you step up to revamp your kitchen for the season. After all, it’s worth noting that the holidays are just a few weeks away. Here are some simple yet effective tips to organize your kitchen for this vibrant season:
Clear out the fridge & freezer
Clear out remnants from the warmer months such as freezer-burned Popsicle sticks and old food supplies that are past their expiration date. Replace these meals with loads of root vegetables, cans of soup, hearty cuts of meat and frozen meals. While you purge, analyze all the summer leftovers you can use for the fall season. This includes the fresh batch of tomato sauce you made when tomatoes were in season!
Organize your baking essentials
Fall is the perfect time of the year to bake cookies, pies, fresh loaves of bread – you name it. To ensure you don’t turn your kitchen into a chaotic mess, make sure all of your baking essent...
We are certainly all for ‘spring cleaning’, but not at all costs. In the last blog we talked about slowing down and approaching your spring-cleaning in a calmer, more relaxed pace. Let’s be honest. How many of us can actually accomplish the 100 Top Things to do for Spring Cleaning, within a one week time period? Or worse, in one weekend? Between working, caring for families and pets, grocery shopping, doing laundry and trying to have a life, our weeks are all a bit full. Trying to find the time to accomplish the impossible is, in our opinion, an exercise in frustration.
Relax, breathe, turn on the music (we love organizing to music – makes the time fly by), make a list of what spring cleaning tasks you want to accomplish in one day, and make sure you have the necessary cleaning and organizing tools you’ll need close at hand.
Today we’re talking about the white elephant in the kitchen – the refrigerator. That wonderful invention that stores our food, houses our out...

Bins & Baskets
We can't say enough about baskets and bins. They can be used in laundry rooms, kitchens, basements, kids rooms, bedrooms, living room, EVERY room! Larger, plastic bins are great for storing seasonal items, clothing, blankets, etc. We prefer using see-thru bins so you can tell at a glance what's in them – saving you from pulling each one down and opening it until you find what you're looking for. Labelling your bins – which we strongly suggest – will save you lots of time and energy...
We all do it. We collect something. Pretty pillows? Anything with a cat picture on it? Cozy blankets? Mugs? Vases? Table cloths? Napkin rings? You name it, one of us collects it. Chances are, we've been collecting our whole lives without being aware of it. Personally, I was obsessed with Barbie Dolls and had to have each new one as it was available; and their matching outfits; and shoes; and purses. My brother loved toy cars. Didn't matter the style, colour, or model. The more the better. There were boxes and boxes of toy cars in his bedroom. However, I can't say too much about his collection considering I had my Barbie collection in a suitcase. There was no way on earth it would fit into one of those teeny, tiny doll cases!
The point is, most of us collect without even being aware of it. More often than not, the things we collect become clutter. They generally don't serve a real purpose, we don't use them, we like...

For those who aren’t familiar with the word pegboard, it is often described as "that thin wood with lots of little holes that holds hooks." It used to be found mainly in the basement where tools and small packages of screws would be hanging on it from a hook, or out in the garage with an assortment of lawn implements attached to it with bungee cords. The days of pegboard being relegated to the depths of the basement or hidden out in the garage are over! Pegboard has finally risen to its rightful place alongside home decor and organizational aids.
Pegboard can be used in literally any room in your house. Craft rooms, kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms, hallways, and yes, basements and garages. It is one of the most versatile and inexpensive decorating/organizing tools available. No longer kept unadorned and plain, pegboard is now painted, stenciled, framed, and proudly displayed as home decor. The question is no longer “Why would you use pegboard in your house?” It is now...
Have you noticed the beautiful fall colours outside? The golds, browns, and spectacular crimson coloured leaves? Aren’t they gorgeous? They remind me of the colour of spices... warm, fragrant, and enticing spices - and spices remind me of cooking, which makes me think of the kitchen, which in turn reminds me I haven’t cleaned up my spice cabinet for quite a while! Do you regularly check your spices for expiration dates?
We always hear about Spring Cleaning, but what about Fall Cleaning? It’s a perfect time to get organized for the Holidays and clean up from the good ol’ days of summer. I’m going to start with - you guessed it - my spice cabinet. Now is the perfect time to take out all of the spices, give them a quick wipe down, and check those expiration dates (spices do lose their potency, over time, so best to discard all those old ones!). While I have the spices out on my counter top, I’m going to wipe down the inside of the cabinet and organize t...
