January is Get Organized Month!

Did you know that January is National Get Organized Month? Indeed it is and what perfect timing! As we move forward into 2017 with our resolutions fresh in our minds, it's the perfect time of year to make a promise to ourselves that THIS is the year to organize our homes, our offices, our cars, and even our little fur babies. In fact, with determination and a little guidance from us, you will learn how to organize and prioritize, save money and time, and best of all - learn how to love the space you're living in with a lot less stress. What a perfect and obtainable goal as we celebrate 2017 with a fresh, new outlook on life! Let's start with a few questions that will help guide you throughout the entire process of organizing and decluttering your home. I've referred to it many times and keep a copy on my desk next to me so I can always stay on track. Even professional organizers need a little reminder every now and then!

We suggest you print multiple copies of these questions and place them in various rooms throughout your house or office. Don't forget to put a copy in your wallet for those times you're tempted to buy something on an impulse. Whenever you're questioning if you 'need' something, refer to the questions and be honest. You'll have your answer. It may be difficult at the beginning, but as you start to see the results of your efforts, it will get easier and easier to let go of things and to resist buying 'stuff'. A great way to begin organizing your space is to purge items that you no longer use, items that no longer serve a purpose, or items that are broken. Are you holding onto them because you paid a lot of money for them? Maybe for sentimental reasons? Would you buy it this second if you saw it in a store? If it serves no purpose, it's clutter. It doesn't matter what its material or sentimental value is. If you're not using it, and it doesn't make you happy, it's clutter. Let's start with the small stuff. How about your sock drawer? It might sound silly, but when is the last time you took the time to sort through all of your socks? Do any of them need mending? Unless you are a pretty good darner, I suggest you get rid of them – including the mate to the worn sock. Are you missing a sock? Do you have socks you received as gifts that you will never wear? Elastic stretched? Be brutal. Take the time to match up the socks and roll them together. If you have children or know someone who does, perhaps those odd socks you need to get rid of could be used to make puppets. It shouldn't take longer than 15 minutes and you'll be surprised at the sense of accomplishment you'll feel when you're done. Try spending 15 minutes each day organizing a different drawer. Before you know it, your entire dresser will be organized. When the dresser is organized, you're ready to move onto your next decluttering task. You did it! Taking your time and focusing on one task at a time is the best way to start organizing your space. Don't try to do too much at one time as it can easily become overwhelming.
